From Mint to Magic: How Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap Supports Farmers in India

What if your favourite bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Pure-Castile Liquid Soap could tell a much bigger story?
Behind the refreshing peppermint scent is a supply chain built around people, communities and the planet. Dr. Bronner’s peppermint and corn mint oils are grown in Uttar Pradesh, India, where the company has worked alongside farming communities for more than 20 years.
Today, this work helps support more than 1,200 smallholder farmers and their communities, and the relationship goes far beyond the moment the mint is harvested.
Growing mint, growing change
Dr. Bronner’s works with farming communities to help support the transition to organic and regenerative agriculture. Farmers receive training, seeds and equipment to help them adopt farming practices that are better for soil, biodiversity and long-term resilience.
It’s an approach rooted in the idea that farming should work with nature, rather than against it.
And it doesn’t stop there!
Giving soil a new lease of life

Healthy soil is at the heart of regenerative agriculture, so projects in the region focus on rebuilding soil health through practices including composting, crop rotation, cover crops and conservation tillage.
One composting initiative is designed to eventually produce around 10,000 tonnes of compost from agricultural waste. The compost is then made available to farmers at a subsidised price, helping turn what could be waste into something valuable for the land.
Planting for the future
The project is also helping to create more diverse and resilient farming systems by planting fruit, shade and beneficial trees, including neem.
These trees can contribute to healthier agricultural ecosystems while providing additional benefits for farming communities - helping make today’s farmland more resilient for the future.
Putting Fair Trade premiums to work
Fair Trade is about more than how crops are grown. It can also help support the communities behind them.
Fair Trade premiums generated through the project have helped fund initiatives including medical camps, home toilets and drinking-water coolers for local communities.
These projects demonstrate how the impact of a supply chain can extend well beyond the farm, helping support practical improvements in everyday life.
Creating opportunities for women
The project also supports women artisans in local communities, providing better tools, improved lighting and skills development.
By helping to improve working conditions and creating greater opportunities to earn an income, these initiatives are another important part of building stronger, more resilient communities.
The people behind the peppermint
It’s easy to think of a bottle of soap simply as a product on the bathroom shelf. But every ingredient has a journey, and behind that journey are farmers, workers, families and communities.

Dr. Bronner’s has been working with mint-growing communities in Uttar Pradesh for more than two decades, building relationships designed to support organic agriculture, strengthen communities and invest in a more regenerative future.
Want to see the people and places behind the peppermint for yourself?
